She stood on the crest of the hill; watched the children playing in the valley below near the long unused logging road. It’d been six years since she’d seen a truck traverse that old road; six years since John’s accident. It was mostly overgrown with weeds now, barely noticeable as a road at all.
Life without John–life as a single mother–was hard. All too often there wasn’t enough food to feed both children and herself so she’d go without.
With tears in her eyes she nudged the pile of precariously stacked boulders over the edge.
“Goodbye, my sweets.”

Dear Adam, This is such a tragic story. The mother is obviously in a deep depression and is going to kill her children with the boulder. Poor kids but I hope the mother gets punished. Sad story Adam! Nan

Adam, what a tragic story. I hope the mother has a change of heart. It was the truck that was the trigger. So sad, but well written. I hope she delays and the truck rescues them with food.

Ack, what a sad ending. I certainly didn’t see that coming. Poor kids. I wonder if she’ll try to explain it away, or if she’ll follow her kids once the deed is done.

Adam, Extremely sad story. I see a murder suicide coming. This happens, so is all too real. Well written. — Susan

Something wicked there way comes . . . and I know, because I’ve only had a single Long Island iced tea (although your story has inspired me to check the fridge for a more appropriate libation–Angry Orchard cider, anyone?)
Cheers!

finding the financial resources to care for a family can take a toll on a single parent. sometimes a mother’s strong nurturing intuition takes over and she does what seems to be the best solution. well-crafted story.

Dear Adam,
Well that certainly had a cheerful ending. I hope someone can stop her or the children move out of the way in time.
Happy Birthday.

I’d say all the stress has pushed Mom over the edge. My guess is if the boulder doesn’t get them she’ll come up with another way.

I hope she follows the boulder!

Darkly sad, Adam. How on earth does such a nice guy find so many chilling ways to kill children? wink wink nod nod!

Yikes! Didn’t see that coming. I think I agree with Dawn’s comment above….
